Really Kicking with Mental Self Defense

This week I was kicking it with someone who is not only one of my very good friends but also my karate instructor Grand Master Bryan “Paz” Pazdzierz. Grand Master Paz is both a highly accomplished martial artist and an IFBB Pro Body Builder. He has trained in martial arts for 32 years, teaching for NAAMA Karate 22 years and has owned his own school for 20 years. He holds many belts including a 1st Degree Black belt in Iaido, a 2nd Degree Black belt in Jujitsu, a 5th Degree Black belt in Tae Kwon Do, and a 7th Degree Black belt in NAAMA Karate.

When I told Grand Master Paz that I was writing this blog about people that I “kick it with” he said he was in. Then I asked him what he would like to share with the world. His response was “Safety and Security.” He told me the first question everyone asks him, is how can I stop someone from harming/robing me? His answer to that question was “first of all it takes three points for a crime to happen, a criminal, a victim, and an opportunity. So the best defense anyone could have is mental self-defense.”  As a fighter studies other fighters so he can be prepared for battle, people must study life so they are prepared for anything.

The idea of mental self-defense is made up of two key elements, common sense and awareness. The common sense element of mental self-defense is exactly that common sense. Park in well lite areas, walk in groups, don’t leave alone, and have a back-up plan. The awareness element of mental self-defense tells you to be aware of your surroundings, the people around you, the route your taking, the cars around you and so on. When you have both awareness and common sense you take away the criminals opportunity.  One stat Grand Master Paz really wanted me to share with everyone is if you have the ability to run two city blocks you can avoid around 75% of attacks.
